Bach Flower Remedies
Origins of Bach Flower Remedies
Bach Flower Remedies were developed by GP, Homeopath and Bacteriologist Dr Edward Bach in the 1920s. After having major surgery Dr Bach used homeopathic medicine to get well, and over time he found himself in better health than ever
This trailblazer then spent years and years of trial-and-error study, which involved rigorously preparing and testing thousands of plants, working out what plants helped with specific mental states or emotions. Eventually Dr Bach settled on the 38 flower remedies which are used across the globe today.
About Me
I started using Bach Flower Remedies in my teens to help cope with the stress and anxiety that exams caused me. I would never leave the house without my trusted Rescue Remedy - it was literally the first thing I packed in my college bag. Since then, I’ve dipped in and out of using different flower essences until more recently, after a period of sleep problems, I began to seriously research which remedy was right for me.
Fast forward to now and I’ve completed a Diploma in Bach Flower Essences – 10 modules, over 150 hours of study and tons of assessments. I loved every minute of it and achieved a Distinction grade. Having more than 14 years’ experience as a traditional Chinese Medicine University trained acupuncturist, really helped cement my understanding of how plants and flowers have energetic healing properties. Rather excitingly Acupuncture and Bach Flower Remedies work wonderfully together to help regulate emotional health problems.
How do they work?
It’s well known that all plants contain a unique chemical cocktail that in many cases has a nutritional or medicinal property. Today, around 11% of the drugs considered 'basic' and 'essential' by the World Health Organisation originated in flowering plants. For example Morphine is made from the poppy plant, whilst snowdrop bulbs are being used in medicine slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease.
So in essence, flowers have a specific energetic or vibrational property that can help heal and transform mind, body and spirit. Bach Flower Remedies can help treat anything from anxiety and fear, to a racing mind, or a feeling of overwhelm.
Taking Bach Flower Remedies
The rule of thumb is 4 drops, 4 times a day, preferably first thing in the morning and before you go to bed at night. The most potent dose comes from dropping the Flower Remedies directly on your tongue, though some people prefer to add it to their water bottle and sip throughout the day. Just avoid touching your tongue with the pipette as you’ll contaminate the blend. Each bottle should last around 30 days if you’re taking the recommended daily dose. There’s no limit to how much of the remedies you can have per day – you can’t overdo it – so use as often as you need. Bach Flower Remedies are perfectly safe, natural and can be used in conjunction with prescription medicine.
When will they start working?
It really depends on how long you’ve been suffering with the problem. Similar to when you are prescribed a course of antibiotics, you will need a similar strategy with Bach Flower Remedies as the effectiveness builds with prolonged use. In most cases after 7-10 days of using the recommended daily dose, you should start to feel better emotionally and then within a couple of weeks you should notice a more obvious change in how you feel.
